Got chewed out for my primer technique on a black pearl respray

A painter I respect told me my wet-on-dry primer layers were creating a texture you could see in the final clear. He said 'You're building a desert under there.' Now I always do a light scuff and a mist coat between full primer layers. Anyone else have a painter's critique that actually stuck with you?

Reminds me of a guy who clear-coated over dust, @fiona985.

That's actually a solid technique for building primer. The real trick is keeping the total film thickness in check, though. Too many layers, even scuffed, can still cause issues.

Wait, clear coating over dust on purpose? That's wild, I can't believe someone actually did that. @susan649, that story is just asking for trouble later on. Like, the whole point is to get a smooth base, not trap a bunch of grit under there. Fiona's totally right about the thickness too, you can sand all you want but if there's too much material it's gonna crack or peel eventually. Just seems like a huge risk for no real gain, lol.
