I fought the old school advice on jambs and lost, heres what happened
A retired painter who used to do collision work back in the 80s told me to stop spraying filler on door jambs because it cracks at the hinge line eventually. I thought he was just stuck in his ways, especially since my spray setup at the shop in Columbus has been my go to for three years. Last winter I did a 2017 Civic, sprayed the jambs like always, and six months later the customer came back with hairline cracks right where the hinge meets the jamb. He showed me the damage and I felt like an idiot, so I stripped it down and used a urethane-based glazing putty with a spreader instead. That repair has held up through salt and rough weather with zero issues. I still use spray filler on flat panels and bigger areas, but now I hand apply anything on a moving part or seam. Has anyone else had similar luck switching methods on jambs or are there other spots where spray filler just doesnt belong?
