My old boss in Detroit said to never use a heat gun on plastic bumpers, but I tried it anyway.

This was back when I was still learning, maybe 8 years ago. He saw me about to hit a dented bumper cover with a heat gun and stopped me cold. Said it would make the plastic weak and ruin the paint. I figured he was just set in his ways, so a few jobs later on a 2008 Civic, I gave it a shot. The plastic did get soft enough to push the dent out, but two days later the whole area had a weird, wavy look under the clear coat. Had to strip it and start over, which cost me half a day. He was right, it messes with the material memory. Now I only use a dedicated plastic welder for that kind of repair. Anyone have a good method for fixing those deep scratches in textured plastic trim without making it shiny?

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I tried to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions.

Sounds like you and that IKEA furniture were both missing some key parts, @terryw67.
