My recent frustration with aftermarket quarter panel fitment

I've observed a trend where aftermarket quarter panels for sedans often have inconsistent contours. This creates problems during installation as the curves don't align with original body lines. Recently, a mid-size car's replacement panel had a bulge near the wheel arch. Despite our efforts with hammering and filler, it wouldn't blend smoothly. The result was a unhappy customer and a costly redo. It's evident that some manufacturers skimp on stamping accuracy. This has made me verify each aftermarket part against the vehicle beforehand. Now, I prefer OEM suppliers for their reliable fit, even at a higher cost.

Actually, we've had decent results with aftermarket panels. Just gotta check the stamping quality before buying. Fitted a Fusion panel last week, contours matched factory lines perfectly. Some suppliers actually get it right.

Friend's panel matched contours after vetting stamping. Who'd they use?

Yeah, the stamping quality thing is real. Reminds me of when I tried to put on a taillight assembly for a 2010 Civic last year. The whole thing looked right but the bolt holes were off by a good quarter inch. I spent two hours drilling and filing until it fit. Customer was patient but I felt bad about the whole mess. Now I just pull the old part off first and hold the new one up against it before I even start any work.
