Overheard a customer at the parts counter say something wild about paint jobs

I was grabbing some clear coat at the supply house yesterday and this guy in line was telling his buddy he got a quote for a full respray on his truck. He said the shop told him $800 and he was shocked it was so cheap. His buddy just stared at him and said 'Dude, that's less than the materials cost for a decent job.' I almost laughed out loud because he was dead right. Makes you wonder what corners that shop is cutting to offer a price that low. Has anyone else run into customers with totally unrealistic expectations about what good work actually costs?

My neighbor just paid $4500 for a quality respray on his classic Mustang, and that was with him doing all the disassembly himself. The idea of an $800 full paint job is just not in the real world. I had a customer last year who was mad we charged $200 to blend a fender, saying he could get the whole car painted for $500 down the street. Those shops use the cheapest single-stage paint possible, skip all the prep, and it looks terrible in a year. People don't realize that most of the cost is in the labor to do it right, not just the paint in the can.
