Talking to a painter out of Tulsa changed how I see clear coat

Honestly, I used to think any clear coat would hold up if you lay it on thick enough. But last month I was talking to this older painter from Tulsa who does resto work on classics from the 60s. He said he stopped using high-solids clear five years ago because he got tired of seeing his jobs peel after three years in the sun. He stuck with a mid-solids system and wets every coat, says it outlasts the fancy stuff by double the time. At first I thought he was crazy, but I checked my own jobs from 2021 and sure enough the ones with mid-solids still look fresh. Anyone else find that the expensive clear isn't always the best bet in the long run?

Guess my clear coat game is as weak as my 2021 resolution promises.

My buddy tried to re-clear his hood last summer and it looked like a cracked eggshell by the end of the week. He used that spray can stuff from the auto parts store and forgot to shake it up first. Now the whole thing's just peeling like a sunburned tourist. At least your resolution promises probably stayed in one piece.

@patricia558 Did he at least sand it down first or just spray over the old clear?
