That painter who said I should skip the final sand

Honestly, I had a guy at a shop in Denver last summer tell me I was wasting time doing a final wet sand before primer. He said nobody would notice the difference and it was just extra work. I tried his way on one door and had to redo it after the clearcoat orange-peeled way worse than normal. Has anyone else run into people who push shortcuts like this?

No final sand before primer? That guy was setting you up for a mess. Orange peel is bad enough without skipping the step that makes everything stick right. Had a buddy try the same shortcut on a fender once and the clearcoat looked like an orange's skin two days later. Had to sand it all down and start over from scratch. Wet sanding is annoying but it saves way more time than fixing a botched job.

A buddy of mine tried that on his truck bed once and the paint started bubbling within a week, looked like a bad case of acne (and not the cute kind). Wet sanding sucks, I'll give you that, but it's way cheaper than buying another gallon of primer and a case of beer for the redo.

Oh man, I had a friend who tried that exact shortcut on a classic Mustang hood... he thought he could just lay down primer over the old paint and call it good. Three weeks later the whole thing was peeling off in chunks like bad sunburn. He ended up spending a whole weekend with a DA sander and 80 grit trying to fix it. Wet sanding is a pain but skipping it just makes more work in the long run.
