The paint match gap between 2015 and 2020 Hondas is getting wild

I had an Accord in the shop last week where the front bumper had clearly been repainted before, and the color was off by three shades. Then a 2020 Civic rolled in with the same exact issue, same factory code, but the mismatch was barely visible. I think the newer waterborne basecoats and the way they layer the clear are just a lot more forgiving than the solvent stuff from 8 years ago. Has anyone else noticed older Japanese paint jobs fading or shifting more than the newer ones, or am I just getting lucky with the recent cars?

Yeah, the "off by three shades" part hits home. I've seen that exact thing a bunch on older Hondas, and it's frustrating when the same code still doesn't line up.
