Took me 5 years to realize I was using my stud welder wrong on aluminum panels
I was pulling too fast and kept blowing through the weld tips, then a seasoned guy at the shop in Denver showed me you gotta slow down and let the heat soak for 2 seconds first. Anyone else have a basic technique click way later than it should have?

I remember reading some old forum post where a guy said the trick with aluminum is to pretend you're welding butter. Let the gun sit there for a beat before you start pulling away. I tried it on some thin gauge and it saved me so many tips. The heat soak is crucial because aluminum dissipates heat like crazy compared to steel, so rushing just makes the puddle collapse. That Colorado shop guy probably fixed a lot of headaches for you. It's wild how something so simple can mess up your whole day when you're doing it wrong.

Nah, cranking the heat works fine if you actually move fast enough.

So you're telling me I spent half a decade basically fighting my tools instead of letting them do the job? That's brutal man. I did the same thing with my MIG welder, kept cranking the settings way too high thinking I needed more heat to burn through dirty metal, turns out I just needed to actually clean the damn surface first. Nothing like a 45 year old mechanic in a stained shirt showing you up with a basic trick you should've learned day one. It's like finding out you been tying your shoes wrong your whole life right after you walked a marathon.
