Unpopular opinion: my $180 paint thickness gauge has paid for itself twice over, and I still feel silly about it
I picked up a cheap digital gauge about a year ago because I was tired of guessing how much clear was left on trade-ins, and it caught a repainted quarter panel on a Silverado that the seller swore was untouched. For $180 it has kept me out of two bad jobs and one argument with a wholesale guy in Mesa, but half the older painters I know say a magnet and your thumb do the same thing for free. Do you all actually use one on every car, or am I just being paranoid with a gadget?
A magnet and a thumb tell you if there is filler under the paint, not how thin the clear is. That gauge is the only thing that shows you a panel was sanded and buffed to death before you buy it. The old guys saying that have never had a repaint come back and bite them on a trade-in. Use it on every car, takes ten seconds a panel. Paranoia is cheap next to eating a bad paint job.
