A customer at the bar last week told me all mechanics are just 'parts changers' and it still bugs me.

Yeah, but @willowh20, those scanners only read what the car's computer lets them see. If there's a weird mechanical fault the sensors don't catch, like a sticky valve the computer isn't programmed to flag, you'll get a clean scan but still have a problem.

That "clean scan but still have a problem" thing is so true. My old truck had a rough idle for months with no codes. Turned out to be a tiny vacuum leak the computer just couldn't see.
