A customer's question about rust made me tackle my own truck differently
Last Tuesday I had a guy bring in a 2009 F-150 with the usual frame rot near the rear shackles. He asked me, plain as day, why I always wire brush and paint over the rust instead of just cutting it out. I gave him the standard answer about labor hours and part cost, but he kept pushing, saying I was just hiding the problem for the next guy. That sat with me all week. So I pulled my own 2011 Silverado into the bay Friday afternoon, and for the first time I actually poked around every mounting point with a screwdriver. Found a spot under the cab mount that was way softer than I wanted to admit. I spent the whole weekend cutting, welding in new plate, and coating it with cavity wax. It cost me about $140 in metal and wire, but now I get why he was so direct about it. Have any of you had a customer's sideways comment make you go back and double check your personal rig?
