Finally wired up a full CAN bus system on my own project car

Heard some kid at the parts counter talking about how he "fried three ECUs" messing with CAN wiring, and it made me double check my own solder joints for an extra 20 minutes before I even turned the key. Anyone else get that paranoid feeling right before you power something like that up for the first time?

Oh man, that parts counter story gave me chills just reading it. I did a full CAN bus retrofit on an older Subaru and spent a solid hour staring at the wiring diagram before I even touched a multimeter. The paranoia is real, especially when you think about how one bad solder joint or a crossed wire can fry everything in the chain. I actually made myself a checklist on my phone and went through it three times before powering up, you know, just to be absolutely sure. There's something about the silence right before you flip the switch that really gets to you. And then the little prayer you whisper to the car gods as it boots up for the first time. Definitely not alone on that feeling.

@vera514 I get the prayer thing, but overthinking it just makes the paranoia worse for me...

Is it really that risky though? I've wired up a bunch of CAN stuff and never had any issues, maybe people just get unlucky or don't ground things properly. @price.gavin The prayer thing is funny but honestly a clean bench test with a multimeter would catch most problems before they blow anything up.
