I finally quit guessing on rear main seals and started using the rope trick my old boss showed me
For the past 4 years I have been doing rear main seals on older small block Chevys the way I learned in trade school, which is drive the old seal out with a punch and tap the new one in with a brass drift. About 2 out of every 10 of those came back leaking within 3,000 miles and it was driving me nuts. Last week a 1979 C10 came in with a 350 and a bad rear main, and I had to decide between ordering a $60 seal puller tool or trying the rope trick my first boss named Ray showed me back in 2011. I went with the rope, just packed braided nylon rope into the seal groove and tapped it in with a small punch, and that truck left the shop Friday with zero drips. Ray always said the rope keeps the seal from cocking sideways in the groove, and I think he was right. Anybody else still using the rope method on old two piece seals or am I the last guy doing it this way?
