My mentor's Snap-on box was half the size of mine and he got more done
When I started turning wrenches in 2008 my mentor ran a two bay shop with one top box and a cart, and he never walked back to the wall once. Over the next ten years the tool trucks kept coming and my box grew to triple the size of his and my feet covered double the shop floor. These days every job starts with me hunting for the 13mm somebody borrowed and a two minute detour to the back corner. My mentor used to say a small box keeps your money close and your tools closer. How do you guys keep from turning a full box into a storage unit?
The gym I go to moved to a bigger spot across town last year. Owners said they finally had room for everything, but now I spend the first ten minutes of every workout walking between the squat rack, the mats, and some machine jammed in the back by the bikes. Same thing happened to my buddy's kitchen when he got the double oven, he cooks less than ever because every pan is a hike away. There's something real to that "small box" idea. When everything lives within arm's reach you just work, but when you got space to spare you fill it and then you're a tour guide in your own shop. My old man ran his whole lawn business out of a single trailer and he never lost a socket in his life. Soon as you have room for doubles of everything, you stop knowing where anything is.
