Honestly the real cost is the resentment that builds up. Free labor can poison family ties way faster than just saying no up front.

Yeah, this hits home. It's a pattern you see in all kinds of relationships, not just family. Help someone once with a small task, and suddenly it's expected every time. That quiet scorekeeping ruins more friendships than any argument. Being clear about limits from the start avoids so much trouble down the road.
