I was about to panic, but he calmly walked over, showed me how to pinch the line with vise grips, and said, 'Kid, the parts store is two blocks away, just go slow.'

That "go slow" advice saved me when my truck's fuel pump quit near an exit.

Remember how @lily70 mentioned that "go slow" advice? It makes me wonder if we should all practice finding a safe spot to lose power, like a downhill stretch near an exit. Your Civic dying right at the gas station is the perfect example of planning your failure, even if it was just luck this time.
