The old diesel mechanic who said torque specs are suggestions, he was wrong and I have the receipt
Back in March a guy at the parts counter in Tucson told me to skip the torque wrench on my F-250 manifold bolts. Said he'd done it 30 years and never snapped one. I listened, snugged them by feel. Two months later one backed out on I-10 and I lost the gasket. Cost me $180 in parts and a full Saturday. Went back and showed him the bolt. He just shrugged. Now I torque everything, even oil drain plugs. Anyone else ever get burned by following old timer advice that sounded good?

That old timer advice thing applies to everything, not just trucks.

Trucks, recipes, parenting advice, all the same old timer stuff, sure. But some of it's just them repeating what their dad said without checking if it still makes sense, @bettyroberts. Half the time it's fine, other half they're still convinced carburetors are the future.
