TIL my old shop teacher's tip about checking wheel bearings by feel beat my $200 stethoscope
I ran into my old shop teacher, Mr. Delgado, at a NAPA in Bakersfield last week, and he asked how I check wheel bearings on a test drive. I told him I use a $200 chassis ear setup because it makes the noise obvious. He laughed and said, "Grab the top of the tire and shake it, then spin the hub slow and feel for grit. Your hands hear more than your ears do." I'd been chasing a grinding noise on a 2011 Civic for two days and my stethoscope kept pointing at the brake shield. I finally did it his way in the bay, and the front left hub felt rough and loose at only 88k miles. The sound was coming through the steering so it threw me off. Now I'm second guessing how often I reach for the fancy tool before my own hands. Has anyone else had a plain old feel test beat the gear you paid good money for?
