Vent: That $400 "lifetime" brake pad warranty was a joke

Put a set of Wagner ThermoQuiet pads on my F-150 two years ago because they promised a lifetime warranty. Went back to the same AutoZone last week after they started squealing, and they said the warranty only covers the original purchaser and I needed the receipt that I lost. So I'm out the full cost and wasted a Saturday doing the swap twice. Anyone else get burned by a parts store warranty that wasn't worth the paper it was printed on?

Did the AutoZone guy actually show you the fine print on the warranty or just handwave it? In my experience, those lifetime warranties usually have so many loopholes they're basically useless unless you keep a binder of receipts and a sworn affidavit from your mechanic. Your mileage may vary, but I've had better luck just buying cheap pads and replacing them myself every couple years vs. chasing a "lifetime" deal that never pays out. Take this with a grain of salt, but I'd check if the manufacturer's warranty is any better, sometimes they honor it directly even if the store won't.

Is it just me or does that whole "fine print" thing seem to apply to everything nowadays? I swear, you buy a "lifetime" battery and it dies in two years, then the warranty requires a receipt from the original purchase plus a blood sample and a signed note from your great aunt. I've noticed that pattern with a lot of stuff, not just car parts. Like when I bought a "lifetime" air filter for my house, same deal, they wanted the original box and a photo of the install date. It's like companies bank on you losing the paperwork, which I always do. Feels like we're all just renting stuff from them at full price, with extra steps.
