Lost $340 on a broker who promised a pickup date and then vanished for 9 days
I needed my Honda moved from Phoenix to Kansas City in March and booked through a broker that quoted me $340 upfront as a deposit. The guy said a driver would grab it that Friday, then for 9 straight days it was one excuse after another, truck broke down, driver quit, weather. I called the actual carrier he claimed to use and they had never heard of him. I ended up paying a second company $890 cash to get the car, and the first $340 was just gone. How do you all check if a broker is legit before handing over a deposit?
Nine days of runaround before you called the carrier directly is the real problem here, not the $340. If you had picked up the phone on day 2 and heard "never heard of him," you would have been out maybe $340 and saved yourself the panic of scrambling for a second truck. And paying $890 cash to a random backup company is its own gamble, no contract, no receipt, no paper trail if that one went sideways too.
