Update: I skipped the broker and called the trucking company direct, saved $340
I needed to move my Civic from Denver to Phoenix and every broker quote came in around $1,100 with vague pickup windows, so on a hunch I called a small carrier in Colorado Springs straight from a load board and they did it for $760. The dispatcher picked up on the second ring, gave me an actual date instead of a three day range, and the driver texted me a photo when he loaded the car. Has anyone else gone straight to the carrier like this, or did I just get lucky with timing?

That "picked up on the second ring" thing is real, middlemen just add lag to everything.
