Everyone here keeps saying the same thing about used trucks, that you just need to know what to look for, but I'm not buying it. Last fall I picked up a 2004 Tacoma for $1100 from a guy up in Bakersfield. It had 240k on the clock, ran when I looked at it, and I figured worst case it hauls parts and pulls the little trailer around the ramp. Two weeks in, the head gasket went. Then the rear diff started howling on the way back from a job at Mojave. By January I had put more into that truck than I paid for it, and I was still bumming rides off a buddy when it sat dead in the yard. I finally sold it to a scrap guy for $300 and ate the whole thing. So when people tell me the cheap beater is the smart move, I just laugh and walk away. Has anybody actually come out ahead on a sub-$1500 truck, or is that just a forum fairy tale?
