Dropped $380 on a used IFR-4000 at the Kalamazoo swap meet and it was dead weight in my truck for 3 months
Bought it from a guy named Dale who swore it worked fine, just needs a new battery. Spoiler, it was not the battery. Took it to our bench and the display came up once, then never again, so I chased it for a weekend with the manual open and got nowhere. Sent it to a repair shop in Grand Rapids and they quoted me $900 plus parts just to look at it deeper. So now I am sitting on a 380 dollar paperweight that cost me 14 hours of my own time on top of it. Sold it at the next swap meet for 60 bucks to a guy who wanted the case. Lesson is simple, if the seller will not let you power it up on the spot, walk away no matter how good the price sounds. Anyone here ever had luck reviving one of these old boxes or do you just part them out?
Picked up a dead HP 8920 at a hamfest years back and got it going by reseating every ribbon cable and card inside. Those old boxes sit in garages for years and the connectors get flaky, so pull the boards and push them back in. Cost me nothing but an afternoon and it fired right up.
