Overheard a newbie call wiring diagrams 'just maps', had to bite my tongue

He said tracing a 429 bus is no harder than following Google Maps, but after I spent 4 hours in Phoenix chasing a short that only showed up on pin 22 of the connector, I told him that maps don't lie to you with intermittent opens, so has anyone else had a junior tech who thinks schematics are optional?

Hear me out, but maybe the kid's not totally wrong. A map gets you from point A to B, and a schematic gets you from power to ground, both are just paths. The difference is the map's road doesn't suddenly vanish on you at 2pm on a Tuesday, but a bad ground on pin 22 will. I spent a whole day once chasing a brake light issue that turned out to be a wire that broke inside the insulation, looked perfect on paper. So yeah, schematics are maps, but they're maps of a place that's always shifting under your feet.
