Pro tip: a chafed wire bundle behind a KA band radar ate up 3 days of my life
Back in my early days we used to find rubbing wires by hand and a flashlight, and honestly sometimes I still think that was faster. Last month I was chasing a radar fault on a King Air that only showed up when the belly got hot on the ramp at Columbus, and it kept throwing an intermittent code that pointed at the receiver. I swapped the unit, checked the connectors, ran the built in test maybe 15 times, and got nothing. Turned out a wire bundle had been rubbing just enough against a clamp to wear through the jacket where nobody could see it from the access panel. I finally found it with a wiggle test after the third day, standing on a ladder with a mirror and a light, and my back still hurts. Now I keep a small bore scope in my kit and it saves me from those mirror tricks. What gets me is how much faster the newer test sets flag stuff, but they still can't tell you about a wire chafing against a clamp. Any of you got a go to move for finding rub spots before you pull half the belly panels off?
