Remembering a lesson from an old mechanic in a Kansas City hangar

He watched me struggle with a stubborn cannon plug for 20 minutes before saying, 'Kid, sometimes you gotta let the tool do the work, not your temper.' Ever have a simple piece of advice completely change how you approach a routine job?

My uncle was a mechanic in Detroit and he always said the opposite. He told me the tool is just an extension of your own force. I watched him reef on a frozen brake caliper bolt for an hour once. He finally got it by putting his whole back into a four foot cheater bar. Sometimes stubborn problems need stubborn force, not patience.

That "extension of your own force" idea is spot on. It's not just about being strong, it's about using the tool to focus all your strength into one spot. Your uncle with the cheater bar wasn't just pushing harder, he was making his push way more effective. Sometimes you gotta find the right lever to convince a stuck part to finally move.

@blair_webb that focus idea is gold, it's all about letting the tool be the smart part while you stay calm.
