Reversed my stance on used testers after a grounding issue in Tulsa

I used to buy only new multimeters and ohm meters, figured used ones were asking for trouble. Then I picked up a beat-up Fluke at an estate sale for $40 and it read perfectly against our shop's calibrated unit. Last month a cheap used loop calibrator I grabbed threw a false continuity reading on a flap actuator, which grounded a 737 for an extra hour in Tulsa. That single incident convinced me to always verify the calibration sticker and run a self-test before trusting any pre-owned gear, no matter how good the price looks. Has anyone else had a used tester fail them at the worst possible moment, or is it just me?
