Took me 5 years to realize I was grounding things wrong

Ngl I used to just find any random screw or bolt on the airframe to tie my ground strap to. Then I got a call from a Delta 737 in Atlanta where the TCAS was giving false alerts, and an old senior tech showed me the manual says you gotta use the dedicated ground studs near the battery bus. He pointed to a factory stamp that said GND 1 and GND 2, and I felt like an idiot. Has anyone else had a moment where a simple labeling change your whole approach?

...and that's exactly the kind of thing that gets you a surprise visit from the FAA, I swear. I spent years just jamming my strap onto any rusty bolt I could find, figuring "ground is ground" right? Then you find out there's a whole system of special studs that are literally painted bright green and labeled, and you realize you've been living like a caveman with a multimeter. At least those Delta guys probably laughed about it over coffee after they showed you the right way. It's like the manual writers knew we'd all try to cut corners so they had to color code it for us. I still catch myself double checking now because I don't trust my own instincts anymore...

Maybe it's not that big of a deal" until you realize everything in life has a secret code you weren't told about.
