Warning: Check Your Bonding Straps on Fuel Tank Work, I Learned This the Hard Way
So about 6 months ago I was doing a fuel quantity indication check on a King Air 200 at our hangar in Wichita and I kept getting intermittent readings on the left main. I chased that gremlin for 2 days, swapped the sender, checked the wiring harness, even pulled the unit to bench test it. Turns out the whole problem was a bonding strap on the tank access panel that looked fine visually but had a resistance of about 4 ohms when I finally put a meter on it. The static charge was messing with the capacitance readings. I've seen at least 4 other techs at our shop skip the bonding check on fuel tank jobs because it looks good and feels tight. A loose or corroded strap can cause way more than just noisy readings too, it's a real safety thing with fuel vapor. Now I keep a dedicated low resistance meter in my box just for these. Anyone else run into weird gauge issues that traced back to a ground or bond you would never have guessed?
