Got roasted by a CPA at a party and it wrecked my budget spreadsheet
I was at a backyard BBQ last weekend and this CPA friend of a friend glanced at my phone when I was showing off my budget tracker. She straight up said "you're tracking the wrong stuff, nobody needs to know their coffee spend down to the penny." At first I was annoyed but then I realized she was kinda right. I had like 30 categories for dumb things but zero tracking for irregular expenses like car repairs or annual subscriptions. So I changed my whole system to focus on 5 big buckets instead of 30 little ones. Now I put $75 a month into a buffer category for surprise costs and it's way less stressful. Has anyone else had a stranger or acquaintance give you finance advice that actually worked better than what you were doing?

The "coffee spend down to the penny" bit hit hard. I switched to 5 big buckets too after a banker friend told me I was overcomplicating it. That buffer category for surprise costs is a lifesaver when your car decides to act up.

Get why it works for people, but I actually like seeing where every dollar goes. Keeps me honest when I have to stare at that $4.50 coffee line item.

Isn't it funny how we all end up using money as a weird form of self-therapy? I've noticed the same thing with people who track every calorie versus people who just eat mostly healthy without counting. The folks who track every penny usually admit it keeps them from impulse buying, kind of like you said. But then the bucket people are the ones who'd rather not see the mess, they just want to know the kitchen is clean enough. Both ways work, but it says a lot about how our brains decide what we can handle looking at.
