Pro tip: A friend in Chicago said my budget tracker was 'financial performance art' and it stung but they were right.

I used to track every single penny across 12 different categories, which took me over an hour every Sunday. They said it was more about the ritual than actual control, and I was just moving money between columns to make it look neat. So I cut it down to just five main buckets: housing, food, fun, savings, and everything else. It takes 15 minutes now and I actually know where my money goes. Has anyone else simplified their system after getting similar feedback?

Twelve categories is a full time job you weren't getting paid for. Your friend was brutally right about it just being a ritual. Five buckets is the smart move.

But what if the ritual itself was the point? Sometimes the work is worth it even without a paycheck.

Ask what happens when you cut the ritual out completely though. Does the work fall apart or does it actually get easier? I've seen people cling to complex systems because they're scared to admit the simple version would work just fine.
