Jeez, it really does sneak up on you. That's just how the system is built though, fees and hidden costs are everywhere once you start looking. It's crazy how the small stuff adds up over time without you even noticing it.

The average expense ratio of 0.45% seems tiny until you realize that's $450 a year on every $100k you've got saved. Over a 30 year career that little number can eat up six figures of your retirement money. I guess we're all just paying for the fund managers to have really nice office chairs.

The whole "nice office chairs" bit got me. Like seriously, those chairs probably cost more than my first car. But the math on that $450 a year thing is actually wild when you think about it. I did the numbers once for a 401k I was looking at and it was something like $50k gone over 30 years just for a 0.4% fee. That's not even counting what that money would have earned if it stayed in your pocket. It makes you wonder how many people just ignore that small percentage because it looks so tiny on paper but eats away everything over time.
