Used to track every dollar in a paper notebook, now I just check my banking app and it feels like cheating
Back in college I kept a little spiral notebook where I wrote down every single purchase, even a 75 cent pack of gum from the gas station on Vine Street. It took me maybe 10 minutes a night and I knew exactly where my money went, down to the penny. Then around 3 years ago I switched to just glancing at my banking app once a week and calling it good. The problem is I stopped feeling the money leave, you know? Swiping a card and seeing a number go down does not hit the same as writing -$4.50 next to "coffee" and watching the page fill up. Last month I looked at my app and realized I had spent $340 on food delivery in 30 days and I had no clue it got that bad. My old notebook would have screamed at me by week one. So now I am going back to writing it out by hand, at least for a couple months. Does anyone else track cash manually still or am I just being weird about paper?
