Appreciation post: that guy who showed me a better way to cross a creek
I was trying to cross this sketchy stream on the Ozark Trail last spring, hopping on wet rocks and slipping everywhere. This older hiker came up behind me, saw me struggling, and just said 'slow down, use your trekking poles as a third leg, feel each rock before you put weight on it.' Has anyone else had a random stranger on the trail give you advice that totally changed how you handle a specific situation?

Is stopping to analyze every single rock really that different from just being more careful in general? I mean, the guy gave pretty basic advice that most hikers would figure out after a few slips anyway. Slow down and watch your footing isn't exactly a secret technique.

Takes the whole "analyze every rock" thing too literally though, doesnt it? Isnt the point just that you actually look where youre putting your feet instead of zoning out and hoping for the best? Like, have you ever watched someone roll their ankle because they were too busy looking at the view instead of the trail?
