DAE have a ranger in Wyoming ask why I carry two maps and now I can't unsee it
We were 8 miles into the Wind River Range when she pointed at my folded-up spare and asked if I'd ever actually used it or just liked the weight. Now I check both at every junction, and I'm wondering if anyone else carries a backup map they never touch.
I read a trip report from a guy who did the Continental Divide Trail and he carried three copies of the same section in different ziplocs. One in his pack, one in his pocket, one in his food bag. Said he lost one crossing a creek in Colorado and another got soaked in Montana, so the third one saved his butt near the end. That kinda stuck with me because I always figured a spare map was just dead weight. But the Wind River thing makes sense too, you pull out the backup when the first one gets wet or the wind rips it. I started keeping mine in a different spot than the main one so I'm not fumbling in the same pocket twice.
