Debate: Planning every mile vs. winging it on the Pacific Crest Trail

I hiked a 50-mile section of the PCT near Mount Whitney last summer with a rigid daily plan. On day 3, a creek was higher than expected and my schedule fell apart, so I just camped early and adjusted. Next time, I'm leaning toward a loose route with flexible campsites instead of booking every night. Which approach has worked better for you guys on longer trails?

No map for three days? That's insane.

On the JMT I carried a paper map but never unfolded it once (just vibes).

A buddy of mine left his map at a resupply and just followed other hikers for three days straight.
