Ditched the guidebook for a paper map in the Smokies, huge difference

Used to plan every mile with my guidebook app, checking elevation profiles and campsite reviews constantly. Then last week on the AT section near Clingmans Dome, my phone died and I had to rely on a $8 paper map from the visitor center. Honestly, I paid way more attention to the terrain and water sources because I was actually reading the contours instead of just following a dot on a screen. The guidebook had me stressing about a 12 mile day that turned out to be fine, while the map showed me a shorter ridge route I never would have tried. Has anyone else found that going low-tech on a familiar trail changes how you see the route?
