Got caught in a hailstorm on the Highline Trail last month and my route plan fell apart in 20 minutes
I had a 4 day plan through the Thorofare in Wyoming mapped out with campsites at 8, 16, and 24 miles, but a surprise hail cell at 2pm on day 2 pushed me 6 miles off schedule and I want to know how people build slack into long routes without losing the whole trip.
Been there, got chased off the Bechler by a storm that wasn't in the forecast and had to walk out 11 miles in one push. What saved me on later trips was planning every day at like 70 percent of what I know I can do, so a blown afternoon just eats the cushion instead of the whole plan. Seems slow on paper but it's the only thing that kept my last long route from falling apart.
