I thought the 'no campfire' rule on the Lost Coast Trail was overkill.

I did the 25 mile stretch last fall and the ranger made a big deal about the fire ban. I figured it was just a rule for careless people. Then I saw how dry the grass was and how fast the wind came up one night. It made total sense. Has anyone else had a rule on a trail that seemed dumb until you saw the reason?

My buddy laughed at the bear can rule in Yosemite until a raccoon chewed through his tent for a pack of gum. The next night, a bear ripped a car door off a sedan at the trailhead. He bought a can the next day. Sometimes you gotta see the chaos to get it.

But like, how often does that stuff actually happen though.

Wait a car door? That's insane. I've heard of broken windows but a whole door ripped off is next level. Makes you realize @jennifer_jenkins that the rules are written because someone had a really, really bad time. It's one of those things that seems super unlikely until you're the unlucky one stuck dealing with it.
