Just realized I was wrong about the whole 'no permits needed' thing for the Enchantments
Back in 2015, a buddy told me you could just show up for the core zone and get a walk-up permit easy. We tried that for three years straight and always got turned away at the Leavenworth ranger station. Finally bit the bullet and entered the lottery last winter, scored a date for this August. The whole process felt like a hassle, but having a guaranteed spot changed the whole trip. Anyone else have a route they only got to do after finally playing by the rules?

My old man swore by iodine tablets for years before I tried a filter.

Ever wonder how many other "common knowledge" backpacking tips are actually just outdated info?

Start by watching people still carrying those massive external frame packs because someone told them it's better for their back. Half the stuff in a typical first aid kit is useless weight, like those giant gauze pads for a wound you'd need a bear attack to get. People still swear by breaking in boots for months when modern ones don't need it. The old advice is just heavy, literally.
