My aunt's knee issues forced us to rethink our route

We picked a trail with more campsites and less elevation gain. Everyone actually had fun this time.

Sounds like a smart move! I always pick the toughest trails and then complain the whole time. My poor knees are begging for a break like that.

On the Appalachian Trail last year, I saw folks pushing through knee pain every day. They said skipping the hard parts would make the whole trip feel cheap... Complaining on tough trails is just blowing off steam, not a real problem. If your knees beg for a break, that's a sign you're doing it right. Easing up all the time teaches your body to be weak instead of strong... The pain fades, but the memory of finishing a rough trail sticks with you.

Ever notice how people treat their cars worse than their own bodies? I knew a guy who'd ignore every weird engine noise until his pickup died on the highway. He'd say "it's just talking" but then needed a whole new transmission. Sometimes that noise isn't grit, it's a warning.

It's like people forget you can just choose the easier path in life too.
