Talked to a ranger in Yosemite who changed how I pack food
I was at Tuolumne Meadows last week and a ranger told me they find Way too many bear canisters cracked because people freeze their food solid. She said bears learn to drop them off rocks after a few tries. So now I'm packing everything in odor-proof bags inside the canister, not just freezing it. Anyone else heard of bears targeting specific canister brands?

Oh for real @bettyroberts, but actually the Sierra Nevada thing is a bit off - that was more in the High Sierra areas near Sequoia, not the whole range, and they mostly target the round canisters that are easier to roll. Either way, I switched to a BearVault after seeing one all busted up at a ranger station.

Oh my gosh, that ranger story gave me chills! I had a similar wake up call when I found out bears in the Sierra Nevada figured out how to roll certain brand canisters down cliffs. Now I double bag everything in those scent proof bags too. What brand of canister do you use now?
