That $40 water filter I bought on impulse ended up saving a rainy night on the Pacific Crest Trail

Picked up a Sawyer Squeeze mini just before a 5-day section hike near Mt. Hood, and when I found the stream I'd planned to use was dry, it let me pull water from a muddy puddle instead. Has anyone else had a piece of gear they almost skipped pay off in a weird way?

Puddle water, $40. Fancy restaurant water, free. Makes perfect sense.

Lol my $20 Walmart tarp saved me from a freak hailstorm above treeline, felt like a genius.
