Thought the AllTrails app was overrated till my buddy got us lost on the Highline Trail

I always figured people using their phone for navigation were just lazy, but after spending 3 hours on a dead-end spur near Glacier last month I changed my tune. My friend insisted he knew the cutoff to Jewel Basin but we ended up bushwhacking through devil's club for like 2 miles. I pulled up AllTrails on a whim and it showed the real junction was 0.6 miles back. Has anyone else had a saved route on there actually bail them out?

Used to roll my eyes at it, but it saved my bacon last summer.

My buddy swears by it now, same as @josepha32, after his fence blew over.

The cell service part is actually kind of key though, AllTrails doesn't work without downloading the map first. You probably already knew that but a lot of people miss that step and get stuck. Did you have the map saved before you hit the trail or did you luck out and have a signal up there?
