Used to carry a water filter on every trip. Now I just boil.
Back in 2019 I was hauling a 3 pound filter system through the Smokies. Hated the extra weight but thought I had to. Then a ranger at the campground told me most small streams up there are fine if you boil for just 3 minutes. Switched over last summer after my filter clogged on day two. Anyone else ditch their gear and go simpler?

Boiling is a solid choice, but have you had any close calls with streams that look clear but might have some nasties in them? A friend of mine nearly got sick in the Catskills from a spring that looked pristine. I keep a small stove and a titanium pot for boiling, maybe half a pound total. Curious if you ever worry about fuel running low on longer trips where fire restrictions are in place.
