Warning: Thought I knew the Appalachian Trail stats until I actually looked at the elevation profile
Turns out there's over 515,000 feet of total elevation gain across the whole thing, which is basically climbing Everest from sea level 17 times. Has anyone else been shocked by a trail stat that made them totally rethink their gear prep?

Yeah the elevation gain on the PCT north of Sierra City is what really surprised me.

Calling BS on this being a real shocker. 515k feet sounds crazy but when you spread it out over 2,190 miles it's like 240 feet per mile. That's a gentle roller coaster, not a death march. Your gear prep should be about weather and water, not elevation drama. Are people really out here changing their whole pack setup because of a number?

Buddy of mine did the PCT last year. Said the elevation gain wasn't the killer, it was the constant up and down that wrecked his knees.
