Debate: Did we watch bad movies wrong back in the VHS era or do streaming services ruin the fun today?

Back in 1998 I had to hunt down a beat-up copy of The Room at a rental store and watch it with friends over pizza, but now I just click a button on Netflix alone in my living room, so which method actually gives you that so-bad-it's-good magic and when did the group experience stop being part of the ritual?

You gotta get people over to your place for a bad movie night, even with streaming. Just put your phone down and actually laugh at the screen with them instead of scrolling through it.

Honestly you're so right about the laughing part. Last time I did this we watched The Room and my buddy Mike tried to do the "you're tearing me apart Lisa" line in a serious voice but he cracked up halfway through and snorted soda out his nose. Took us like twenty minutes to clean it off the couch cushions. Still one of the best nights we've had in months even though the movie itself was a total trainwreck.

Did you guys pick a specific snack or keep it simple? I remember one time I dragged my cousin over for a "so bad it's good" double feature like you're describing, @torres.grant. We rented Troll 2 and The Wicker Man from the library of all places. My cousin brought those cheap gas station nachos with the fake cheese. Halfway through the "You can't piss on hospitality!" scene she got laughing so hard she dropped the whole tray on the floor. Nachos and cheese everywhere, the dog went crazy trying to clean it up. We never even finished the second movie because we were too busy reenacting the bad scenes ourselves. It was way more fun than sitting quiet on our phones anyway.
