Sat through 'The Room' with my book club and nobody laughed once

I convinced my neighborhood book club to do a movie night instead of our usual discussion. I picked 'The Room' because I figured it would be a riot with all those awkward scenes and bad acting. But six of us sat there in total silence for two hours. Nobody cracked a smile during the football tossing scene or the rooftop stuff. At the end, Barbara said it was 'a thoughtful meditation on betrayal.' I learned that some people just see movies differently, and maybe I should stick to watching bad movies with folks who actually enjoy them. Has anyone else had a group totally miss the point of a so-bad-it's-good film?

Isn't it funny how we all walk around with these totally different filters for what's funny or meaningful? Seems like some folks are determined to find deep meaning in a trainwreck while the rest of us just want to laugh at the wreckage.

Do you think the people looking for deep meaning actually find it, or are they just trying to convince themselves the trainwreck was worth their time? Idk, I feel like sometimes the ones laughing are just being more honest about not knowing what to do with a mess. Maybe it's just me, but isn't pretending to find wisdom in something hollow kind of its own special kind of cringe?
