That guy at the thrift store who called 'The Room' a masterpiece

I was digging through a bin of VHS tapes and this older dude next to me grabs a copy of 'The Room' and goes 'this is the Citizen Kane of bad movies.' He spent 10 minutes explaining how Tommy Wiseau's acting is actually genius-level trolling. Has anyone else met a random stranger who totally changed how you see a so-bad-it's-good flick?

Lean into it hard. Next time just nod real serious and say "you know, the football throwing scene actually mirrors the chaos of human connection." If they laugh, you found your people. If they stare, hand them a copy of Birdemic and say "this one's got a deeper message about environmental collapse and bad CGI eagles." Best case they become a thrift store friend. Worst case you get a funny story about the time you weirded someone out with movie takes.

Man, that guy sounds like my spirit animal. I remember telling a friend once that 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' is actually a deep meditation on death and aliens, and they looked at me like I had three heads. Maybe it's just me but I think those guys who get genuinely excited about the weird stuff are the best part of thrift stores. I mean, I once spent 15 minutes trying to convince a stranger that 'The Apple' from 1980 is a warning about the music industry disguised as a disco fever dream. Got a blank stare in return, but it was worth it.

Oh man, I've been there. My advice is to just lean into it and treat the blank stares like a badge of honor. In my experience, you can usually salvage the conversation by asking them if they've ever seen something so bad it circles back to being brilliant.
